March Musings – Walk by Faith

Happy Tuesday! To start the week off on the right foot my friend Rebekah is sharing some thoughts on faith ~ ENJOY!

Walking by faith even when we cannot see

We are only three months into 2014, yet somehow God has already taken me through more than a few unexpected turns. Divorce has introduced itself to my family. Close friends have found new, faraway places to call home. All the while, the circumstances of these happenings have blinded me from the big picture.

My human nature is to frantically leap for the next step as it comes into view. Consequently, the hasty decisions that come from my limited vision deprive me of experiencing the full joy that the Lord has intended for my life. Instead of seeing God’s glory in my grief, my eyes have focused in on the temporary discomfort of the world’s trials.

Walking by sight is all we know to do. Yet God calls us instead to walk by faith, whether we can see or not. The creator of the universe goes before us to light our path, give us wisdom and bring fruition to our lives.

Before we get caught up in the unexpected (and sometimes unwanted) changes life brings, we have to choose faith over fear. Even when our plans fail, the Lord is sovereign and faithful to fulfill his promises.

Will you join me in striving towards new sight?

This week, I will try to reopen the eyes of my heart to see the real purpose in my life…

What do they do? :

They work in the town of Jubilee, Haiti to nurture the growth and development of an inspiring group of artisans and entrepreneurs.

What is the meaning behind the name 2nd Story Goods:

The name 2nd Story Goods was inspired by the idea that they take human lives and raw materials and create new stories with them.  As you look through their store you will see that the materials they use are all recycled, this  gives those resources a second story and enables the artisans to create an income thus building lives of self-sufficiency.

Who are the artisans? :

World Water Day

Hello and Happy Saturday! I don’t usually post on Saturdays but I recently became part of the Global Team of 200. As part of this team, we committed to sharing about certain topics, events, causes etc. and today is World Water Day!

Owly Images

WaterAid is one of the main organizations behind World Water Day, and as part of the day, they are encouraging everyone to tell a water story. Honestly, the first thing that came to my mind when thinking about water in my life was the fact that I have been opting out of washing my hair lately (twice a week is more than enough, right?). I jokingly tell my friends it is that I am doing my part to conserve water.  Truthfully though, washing my hair just hasn’t been on the top of my priority list, it takes time and energy that I would rather spend elsewhere.  This reveals so much about my life and good fortune;

I can choose where I spend the majority of my time because I have the unbelievable luxury of clean water, running out of my faucets at the flip of a knob.  Not only that, but I can choose to have ice cold water for my drinking pleasure, piping hot for my showering delight, and everything in between.

This seemingly simple occurrence is actually an amazing gift:

768 million people do not have access to safe drinking water. [1]

Women in developing countries typically walk an average of 4 miles each day to obtain water. [1]

I don’t have time to wash my hair, yet so many of my fellow sisters around the globe don’t have time to attend school or pursue other interests because their primary task is getting water. In fact, in Africa women spend 26% of their time gathering water. [2]  Friends, that is 1/4 of their life spent. gathering. water.

Can you imagine the impact that these women could have on their families, their communities, and the world, if they could spend 1/4 their life learning, creating, working, pursuing dreams and passions, LIVING?

We can make a difference ~ Let’s help tell a different story for the millions of people without access to clean drinking water.

If you want to help provide water and raise awareness about the global water issues, check out WaterAid’s Tool Kit for 10 things you can do today!

Noonday Collection~

If you are following the Noonday Blog Train~ WELCOME to Bought Beautifully and THANKS for stopping by! If you are a regular reader, you can catch the Noonday Blog train by reading yesterday’s inspirational post by Annie here and Jennifer‘s post tomorrow. You already know that I am a big fan of Noonday Collection, I have talked about them and featured them on more than one occasion – see here.  What you don’t know is that I recently became a Noonday Ambassador!!!

At first, I was reluctant to become an Ambassador, due to the fact that we are starting a non-profit organization, Consumers in Christ (still a work in progress but coming soon!). I didn’t want to seem like I favored one organization over another.  However, I realized that if our mission is to build and support a Christ centered economy, then I need to be doing everything  I can to work towards our mission.  Becoming a Noonday Ambassador was an obvious means to that end.  As an ambassador, I have the opportunity to support, share and promote a company that does business in the image of Christ.

Noonday Collection, Why do I love you so? Let me count the ways ~

In this world, where greed and cutthroat business practices are the norm, Noonday Collection has managed to create a thriving business model that is centered on love, respect and generosity:

  • They pay their artisans fair, living wages based on the local context and build equitable, long term, economic partnerships  ~

  • They know the names and faces of the people they work with and build genuine relationships with them  ~

Sunita_India Ruby_India

  • They sell beautiful, stylish, high quality products ~

Noonday Collection Products

  • AND Noonday gives back by supporting adopting families ~

This is where it gets personal and where Noonday has completely blown my mind with their generosity.  Noonday started as an adoption fund raiser, and even though it has grown into an incredibly large and successful company, it has stayed true to its roots and continues to support adoptions.  So, thanks to their amazing ambassador program;

  1. I can host trunk shows with 10-20% of the sales going to support friends and family’s adoptions. *If you are interested in hosting a show, let me know, you can also earn some amazing products. (Long distance friends – we can even do virtual shows!!)

  2. AND we can direct 20% of purchases made through my Noonday site towards our adoption!!! Check out my page, save it to your bookmarks, and any time you feel like shopping, we would be honored and thrilled if you helped fund our adoption!

So, to celebrate all the awesomeness that is Noonday, we will be giving away the Lovely Loops Necklace~

Noonday Lovelyloops

If you don’t have Facebook, you can enter by sharing the post via email to 10 of your friends, make sure you leave a comment below letting me know that you shared.

Rich, rich, rich…

I just came across this website The Global Rich List and wanted to share with all of you.  Check it out to see where you stand in the ranks of global wealth.  I really like this site because it gives you visuals and statistics that demonstrate our true wealth.  Yes, I said wealth because, if you are reading this, in your free time, on your computer – you are wealthy!!! Check it out – The Global Rich List.

I stumbled upon this at the perfect time as I needed a reminder of all my good fortune.  With the exception of being blown away by the blessing of having two healthy kids, I haven’t been living in a state of awe and gratitude for all that I have been given.  I have taken for granted all the little luxuries of life that come so easy for me.  For example, opening a can of soda or any beverage of choice without having to work 7 hours to earn it…Global Rich list - small things

Soda is not my thing but Starbucks Vanilla Bean Frappuccinos with extra whipped cream are and in my privileged world, the only time association I have to think about is how far I would have to run to burn off the Vanilla Bean Frappuccino…

So,why is it so easy for me to forget how lucky I am when it comes to material wealth?

Probably, it is because I am surrounded by other extremely wealthy people.  I forget that my reality is not the reality of the majority; I am comparing myself to the richest 10% of the world…Who have the luxury of worrying about the fact that my winter boots are so “3 years ago”, that the paint on my house is already chipping (we just painted, darn it!), that I have to do laundry again or that my car is always getting stuck in the snow.  The fact of the matter is I am lucky to have a car, as 93% of my friends around the world don’t even own a car (1)!!!

I am thankful for sites like this and statistics like these which bring me back to reality:

Global Rich ListObviously, I can’t go giving my monthly salary away every month…but maybe I could choose to go without something to fund one doctor for one month?  Or maybe, more importantly, I could live everyday in gratitude and awareness that –

I have a feeling that if I woke up each day remembering this, the trivial worries of my life, would in fact, seem more trivial…
